About Steve

Born and raised in Smithfield in eastern North Carolina, Steve attended Camp Ridgecrest for Boys starting as a camper in the summer of 1962 and later as a counselor and staff member until 1976.  His experiences there were life-shaping, causing him to move to Marion, North Carolina (the closest small-town county seat to Ridgecrest) after graduation from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1977.

Steve is both a trial attorney and transactional attorney, with a focus in business issues, wills and trusts, estate planning, estate administration, and land issues.  He has spoken for years at many continuing professional education seminars for attorneys and CPAs in the area of estate planning, wills and trusts.  Steve has also been admitted to present legal arguments to the United States Supreme Court.

Steve married Alice Hobbs in 1978 and they have two wonderful daughters, Mary (2009 Wake Forest grad now in Boston University School of Theology) and Sally (2012 Western Carolina University grad with elementary education major).  Alice retired in 2008 after many years as a public school counselor in McDowell County, NC.

Steve was elected Mayor of Marion, NC in November 2009 after serving 24 years as an elected member of the Marion City Council.  A very active member in First Baptist Church of Marion, Steve now teaches the 4th-6th grade Sunday School class after having taught the Senior High School class for 25 years.  Steve has been a deacon at FBC since 1979, member of the choir, member of the adult handbell choir, and has managed local logistics in Belize for 7 FBC medical/construction mission trips to the poor interior of that Central American country.

Steve has been deeply involved in Baptist life for many years.  He was installed in 2009 for a one-year term as state Moderator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina and completed his tenth year in 2011 as a Trustee of NC Baptist Hospital of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Steve’s past Baptist service includes serving as Trustee of several North Carolina Baptist institutions and program speaker on several occasions for the NC Baptist Foundation.
